Herculaneum Site Approach

Herculaneum Site Approach
Nikon D50 - 18-55mm lens

This was my first proper view of the Herculaneum Site. At the bottom of the picture are the arches of the boatyards where around 300 skeletons were found of people who died in the pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius in 79 AD. They may have been attempting to shelter there from the eruption, or awaiting boats for evacuation. On the right lie the suburban baths and on the left a sacred area containing temples. In the centre above the main wall is the House of the Deer in a prized waterfront location.
